Huntington - Homeless Veteran Stand Down

In military terminology, “Stand Down” is an order to relax from a state of constant readiness or alert. Homelessness by its very nature results in extreme prolonged stress, due to the necessity of being constantly on alert, and ready to react to danger. It’s a frightening and exhausting way to live, needless to say. Each year we have an event known as the Homeless Veterans Stand Down, to give all Veterans the opportunity to take a break from their everyday stress. This event is designed for Veterans and their families to be able to let their guard down, have fun, and reconnect with fellow Veterans, all while easily accessing a very wide variety of VA and community services in one location. It’s a LOT of fun, and is best described as a “block party” for Veterans – we have a live band and lots of good food; there’s even dancing and karaoke, for those who are so inclined. Last year, in Huntington alone, we had well over 100 Veterans in attendance!
