The West Virginia Veterans Home is a 125-bed facility on a 23-acre plot overlooking beautiful downtown Barboursville, West Virginia. The Veterans Home, authorized in 1975 by the West Virginia State Legislature and was open to residents in 1981, serves as a convenient and comfortable home for Veterans discharged under honorable conditions who need safe and affordable housing.
- Domiciliary Program
Designed for veterans looking for a long-term place to call home, this program grants full access to all services and amenities offered at the Veterans Home. As prescribed by federal law, program costs are shared by assessing a monthly maintenance fee equal to 50 percent of the resident’s total monthly income.
- Project-214 Program
Created to support Veterans experiencing homelessness, Project-214 offers a supportive temporary residence with complete access to facility services for 60 days at no cost to the veteran. During this stay, our social work staff work closely with residents alongside the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Homeless Services to help veterans secure sustainable, long-term housing.
Resident well-being is our top priority. Our nursing department is staffed around the clock to provide compassionate first aid, preventive care, and medication assistance. Additionally, we provide convenient, regular transportation to the nearby Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center for residents’ regular and more extensive medical and mental health needs.
Our newly remodeled and well-equipped cafeteria serves three delicious meals a day. We have a Registered Dietician on staff to help residents reach individual nutritional goals, manage health, and address any dietary need. If a resident will be gone during meal time, our Dietary Specialists are happy to pack a fresh lunch for them.
We take immense pride in our strong connection to the local community. Many of our residents stay active by volunteering both within the community and at the Veterans Home, attending school or work, and working toward personal goals. It brings us great joy to see past residents transition from the Veterans Home to fulfilling careers and thriving, independent housing.
Life at the Veterans Home is vibrant and engaging. Our dedicated recreation staff organizes fun events and activities that promote camaraderie and overall well-being. Residents can also enjoy a well-stocked library, gym, a computer lab, and comfortable lounges designed for relaxation and friendship.
To ensure peace of mind for everyone, safety and security are our number one priority. As a closed facility, all residents and guests kindly sign in and out, and weapons or illicit materials are strictly prohibited to keep our environment safe for all.
General Information
Please note that while our home provides an active, independent living environment, it is not a skilled care or treatment facility and cannot accommodate veterans requiring constant daily care, or hands on assistance.
Our rooms accommodate one, two, three, or four residents, with special care given to pair compatible roommates. We warmly welcome female Veterans and provide a dedicated, locked floor for them. Income is never a barrier to admission, though residents contribute half of their monthly income toward maintenance costs.
We encourage personal freedom and flexibility: residents can easily take leave for up to three days a week with a simple sign-out. Additionally, residents are eligible for up to 30 days of furlough leave each year. We warmly invite friends and family to visit and they are welcome to enjoy meals in our cafeteria with their veteran at no additional cost.
Above all, an emphasis is placed on maintaining a warm, attractive, and comfortable home for West Virginia Veterans. Both residents and staff extend our warmest invitation to come visit; we know you will be as proud as we are of this wonderful community.
Assistance with residency applications is readily available at any West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance Benefits Office, or by reaching out to us directly.
